What is flexible learning?
Flexible learning provides more choices in determining the content, sequence, pace and location of study to suit lifestyle and learning needs. In many ways, flexible learning is the same as a correspondence course which uses modern methods and technology. Students can enrol and begin study at any time, and most programs allow an individual pace of study (within national guidelines). Many TAFE courses and programs are offered through flexible learning modes.
Study options vary between programs, but may include:
-
workbooks and study guides which can be worked on anywhere, anytime
-
subject material accessed on the Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE learning network or the internet
-
videoconferencing and videostreaming
-
tutorials and workshops delivered at a TAFE campus.
Assessment methods also vary but may include:
-
written assignments
-
computer based assessment
-
examinations.
Please contact Admissions staff or the program coordinator to discuss study options. All students studying flexible programs are supported by our Flexible Learning Network.
What is the Flexible Learning Network?
The Flexible Learning Network comprises a series of Flexible Learning Centres located across the institute, each housing an Electronic Learning Centre with modern computing facilities, internet and email access, as well as the software and equipment required to complete the program/course. The centres also stage video and teleconferences and workshops. Flexible Learning Centres are located at:
-
Cairns
-
Innisfail
-
Mossman
-
Atherton
-
Tully
-
Thursday Island.
Open up to 18 hours a day, Flexible Learning Centres offer a quiet place where students can concentrate on studying away from distractions. The centres also provide an environment where students can choose to work with each other. A swipe card can be purchased to give after hours access.
Online learning
Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE offers a range of programs and courses online through its Online Learning Management System. Most online components of training programs use the Online Learning Management System for delivery of program material, communication between members of the class, forums, live chat sessions and/or submission of assessment items. The teacher will supply a username and password if the program utilises these features. Online learning provides many added benefits to students compared to traditional classroom instruction techniques.
-
The main benefit is that online learning does not require physical attendance at TAFE. Students can study online from home, or our Flexible Learning Centres. All online programs and courses can be accessed at any time, day or night allowing students to study at their own pace and intensity without the uniform pace of a classroom.
-
Online learning optimises abilities and skills. Students can choose to skim over familiar materials and concentrate on areas containing new information.
-
The informative style of training encourages learning through text, pictures, interactive diagrams, links to online resources and web forums.
-
Online learning allows students to upgrade IT skills, even if the program is not directly related to an IT area.
Companies and individuals can save a substantial amount of time and travel costs by tranferring to an online mode of training.
